Medical Hands for Healing (MHH) completed it's second successful trip to Santa Ana, El Salvador the first week of November 2008. Thirty Eight physicians, nurses, operating room technicians and ancillary personnel performed 102 major surgeries during the four and a half day work week. The types of surgeries performed included: cleft lip and palate repairs, laparoscopic cholecystectomies, laparoscopic ovarian cystectomies and total hysterectomies, arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgeries and ACL reconstructions and rotator cuff repairs.
While performing surgeries was the main focus of the group, teaching the Salvadoran doctors and nurses, at the Hospital San Juan de Dios, new procedures and techniques was also an important function of Medical Hands for Healing's mission. By helping to teach the local health care personnel newer and less invasive surgical techniques, MHH hopes to advance medical care in countries such as El Salvador. Every member of the group contributes to the education process. Sometimes this is accomplished by direct instruction of new medical/surgical techniques. Other times through social camaraderie with our Salvadoran friends. There is always something to be learned by all participants on a trip of this nature.
